"Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid"

 Bertrand Russell:
"Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth, more than ruin, more even than death... Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible, thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habit.  Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid.  Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man."

The Doctor descends into the Pit of Hell, quite literally.
The Matrix:
"You take the blue pill- the story ends and you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe.  You take the red pill- you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes."

Betcha thought there was a spoon.  You're wrong.  There is no spoon.

Sherlock Holmes(also in Star Trek, Doctor Who, and I think The X Files):
"Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

Doctor Who:
"[on Mr. Halpen] 'They... turned him into an Ood.'  'Yup.'  'He's an Ood.'  'I noticed.'
'It's weird, being with you, I can't tell what's right and what's wrong anymore.'  'It's better that way.  People who know for certain tend to be like Mr. Halpen [human that enslaved the ood].'"

The Doctor chats with The Devil and is not particularly impressed.
"'[The Beast] is playing on very basic fears.  Darkness, childhood, nightmares, all that sort of stuff.'  'But that's how the Devil works!'  'Or a good psychologist.'"

"'But if this is the original, does that make it real?  Does that make it the actual Devil?'  'Well, if that's what you want to believe.  Maybe that's what the Devil is in the end: an idea.'"

"the world is so much stranger than that.  It's so much darker.  And so much madder.  And so much better."
